Its a busy year for the PigPen Theatre Company, comprised of CMU Drama alumni who formed when creating their first show for Playground: A Festival of Independent Student Work.
It was just announced that their new show THE OLD MAN AND THE OLD MOON will enjoy an off-Broadway run as part of the Soho Rep season, opening at The Gym at Judson on October 4th.
PigPen creates atmospheric theatrical fables with a unique blend of shadow puppetry, group movement, live music, and clever lighting effects. Formed at Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in 2008, PigPen has toured nationally and became the first company in history to win the top honor for a play at the New York City International Fringe Festival two years in a row, in 2010 and 2011.
“The Old Man and The Old Moon” tells the epic tale of one elderly gentleman’s spectacular voyage to the ends of the earth in search of his lost love. Bound to his duties as the caretaker of the moon, the Old Man of the title lives a quiet, contented life until the day he discovers his beloved wife has left their home in search of a mysterious melody carried in the ocean breeze. In her pursuit, the Old Man will encounter titanic leviathans of the deep, apocalyptic storms, civil wars, cantankerous ghosts and an entire world peopled by startling characters and fantastical creatures.
They also released their first CD entitled BREMEN, which can be found on iTunes, Bandcamp and Amazon.com. To hear samples and purchase some songs, go online here. To celebrate and share their music, they've also been asked to perform at Joe's Pub this fall.
On top of that, they've now delved into producing and creating an animated short video which will be incorporated into their show. Watch the clip below!
