Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama Associate Professor of Dance Tome' Cousin has been named the 2020 winner of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education's (ATHE) prestigious Ellen Stewart Career Achievement in Professional Theatre Award. The award is one of ATHE's two most prestigious accolades, named in honor of Ellen Stewart's profound legacy to the profession and the academy. Honorees are selected on the basis of superlative contributions to the field, sustained excellence during their career, innovative work that has established new frames of reference, support for diversity in theater, and service and advocacy on behalf of fellow theater artists.

Cousin joined the CMU faculty in 2011. The move to arts education followed an award-winning international career that included collaborations in dance, theater, music, film, photography, television and literature.

Dan J. Martin, dean, College of Fine Arts. "His accomplishments throughout his career and his dedication to educating the next generation of artists speak volumes about Tome' and his belief in the power of the arts to positively affect lives."

Cousin recently traveled to Monticello High School in Charlottesville, Virginia, to work with the students of the 2019 Excellence in Theatre Education Award winner, Madeline Michel. While there with fellow drama faculty member Catherine Moore, Cousin taught a master class with Michel's high school students and shared advice with them about future endeavors — within the arts and as theater/arts enthusiasts. Read more about the master class here.

Cousin also talks about his personal experience in discovering the arts as a creative outlet.

"I'm quite overwhelmed with gratitude and memories," Cousin said upon hearing he had been chosen as the award recipient. "I've never received anything like his before and was not prepared for the flood of memories that have come."
