Megan Monaghan Rivas
Interim Head of School, Associate Professor, Dramaturgy
Megan Monaghan Rivas joined the faculty of the School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University in 2013. As a professional dramaturg she served as literary manager of South Coast Repertory Theatre, where she co-produced the Pacific Playwrights Festival and co-edited the anthology Plays from the Pacific Playwrights Festival.
Monaghan Rivas led the literary departments of the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and Frontera @ Hyde Park Theatre in Austin, TX, and oversaw the artistic programming for playwrights at the Lark Play Development Center in New York City and The Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis.
She has worked in a freelance capacity with such organizations as the New Harmony Project, the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Company One, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Actors Express Theatre, Horizon Theatre, and Shakespeare Festival St. Louis. As a selection panelist and funding panelist she has worked with the National Endowment for the Arts, the MAP Fund, the Source Festival in Washington DC, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, and the Van Lier Fellowship.
Monaghan Rivas previously taught at the University of Iowa, Indiana State University, the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University, St. Louis University, and the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Her professional affiliations include LMDA where she served a term on the Board, TCG, ATHE, and NoPassport. She is a member of the National Advisory Board for Austin ScriptWorks. Megan was the recipient of the Elliott Hayes Prize in Dramaturgy, and used it as a model to create the student dramaturgy program for the Kennedy Center – American College Theatre Festival.
