Technical Director
Class of 2023
(he/him)

Bio:

Victor Gutierrez is a Technical Director graduating with an MFA. He earned a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in February 2018, where he gained a strong technical background with strengths in structural analysis and robotics as well as project management skills. He has worked as a freelance carpenter and electrician for theater across the greater Boston area, serving on productions like Jagged LIttle Pill and We Live in Cairo at the American Repertory Theater and Quixote Nuevo and Yerma at the Huntington Theatre Company. He enjoys being able to apply the problem-solving skills he developed at MIT working in a more collaborative and creative industry.

While at Carnegie Mellon, Victor has grown his technical skills in machine design and advanced fabrication design classes, while also surveying classes in the Mechanical Engineering department. He has also worked on productions as a Job Lead managing a crew of undeclared design/production students. Victor served as a Project Manager this year overseeing the entire technical direction office from budgeting to install. Victor most recently served as the Technical Director for Michigan Shakespeare Festival’s 2022 season, where he applied his recent education on three shows with a limited carpenter crew.

Victor wishes to be a Technical Director or Assistant Technical Director for a regional theater, and he is moving to Chicago after graduation to pursue that goal. He is an advocate for sustainable mental-health policies in the theater industry, having seen firsthand the effects of high-pressure burnout, as well as artistic work that serves underrepresented communities. He hopes to work for a theater company with these values at their core.

When he is not working on a production, Victor enjoys playing Dungeons & Dragons with friends or watching RuPaul’s Drag Race with his fiance and their cat.
