Jessica Winward

Lighting Designer
Class of 2024
(she/her)

Bio:

Jessica is a multi-faceted creator and designer who enjoys designing for theater, opera, dance, and architecture. She is currently in her third year working towards her M.F.A. in Lighting Design at Carnegie Mellon University.

Originally from Rhode Island, Jess grew up with the passion and drive to become a veterinarian. However, she realized through participating in theatre in high school and in her undergrad that her true passions lie in the theatrical design setting.  Now, Jess uses her theatrical skills to explore new disciplines of theatre, opera, and dance and architecture. She will often be snapping photos of interesting lighting looks that she sees in the world around her, hoping to one day use them onstage when something calls for it.

At Carnegie Mellon, Jess has had the opportunity to work on a multitude of different projects and disciplines.  Some of these projects include operas in collaboration with the School of Music, an opera in collaboration with Quantum Theatre, an architectural lighting package in collaboration with students in the School of Architecture, among others.  Jess is currently working on her thesis, a 4-story building creation with an emphasis on daylighting driving the shape and form, an emphasis on overall human health in relation to circadian rhythms, and how the atmosphere that workers inhabit can seek to benefit their health.

When she isn’t actively participating in theatre, you can find her watching an episode of Jeopardy!, playing tennis, or trying out a new recipe that she has had her eye on.  Jess is also an avid foodie, plant and animal lover, and will always try out a new restaurant.

Jessica currently works as a Junior Designer at JKM Lighting Design, an architectural lighting design firm based in Naples, FL.
