Peter Burns

Sound Designer
Class of 2024
(he/him)

Bio:

Peter is a sound designer, composer, and mixer whose projects vary from musicals, plays, short films, radio dramas, children’s shows, and small concerts. He was the first person to do a live mix of a mainstage production inside the Alice Busch Opera Theater at the Glimmerglass Festival when he was the mixer for The Sound of Music. The following year, he had the opportunity to mix the Cantico concert at the festival that featured the musical talents of Natalie Merchant and Anthony Ross Costanzo.

In both his compositional and design work, Peter loves to create atmospheres that the listener can visualize. He utilizes extended techniques to create a variety of textures through different instrumentations and is interested in different ways to have instruments create sound effects, both processed and unprocessed.

Peter is currently researching MIDI (musical instrument digital interface), as a tool for performance capturing and replicating instruments, along with how it is used by different industry professionals in their creative practices and its general protocol. As well as how to blend the sounds of virtual instruments created through MIDI, with sounds created by musicians, and how to expand on this relationship without taking away jobs from musicians.

In his free time, Peter can be found cuddled up on the couch with his trusted feline sidekick, June, watching one of their favorite TV shows/movies or playing video games. If he isn’t there, he may be out for a walk, playing his guitar or flute, practicing calisthenics, or working on a new piece of music.
